FabMo at MakerFaire

FabMo is going to MakerFaire in San Mateo again this year!
This has been a really fun venue for us for the past several years. The interest is high and the participation at the activity table has been very strong. Projects have been designed with young kids in mind, but they’ve also been very well received by some rather senior visitors in the past! Visitors are thrilled to get fabric “roll-ups” with samples of FabMo’s treasures.
This year we’ve been asked to make our projects available for a special visit by a group of about 2000 kids (up to high school age) on Thursday, May 16, from 11 to about 3. Most of these kids wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend MakerFaire at all, and we’re very pleased to accommodate them.
It means, however, that instead of setting up on Friday, we have to be ready to host the activity tables by late morning on Thursday. We plan to start setup by 8am, Thursday, and have the activity ready to go by 10.
This is a great volunteer event! Everyone seems to have a fabulous time in the booth. It’s also been tradition that they get a pass for the day to see the exciting variety of stuff at the Faire. Come for the whole day and share a few hours with FabMo. See robotics, computers, fire art, steam punk, sewing, life-size Mousetrap game, rocketry, etc. . Fine Art and Frames

May’s Selection Event will focus entirely on a variety of fine art posters and prints, mirrors, mats, plus a nice selection of high quality frames that have recently come to us.
Come and see
• More than 100 prints, offset lithographs and original art some of which can be seen here.
• About fifty frames ranging in size from 44x56 down to small table-top size.
• About half a dozen beveled mirrors of various sizes.
• Lots of beautiful acid-free and/or buffered mats in various hues, finishes and sizes are also on hand.
The plan is to make these items available to the FabMo community on Friday from 3-8pm, and to publicize them more widely on Craigslist for Saturday 3-7pm. No appointments are necessary for this event.
Please note that this Fine Arts event takes the place of the normal Selection Event. Our normal events will resume June 6-8.

Winning ribbons at the County Fair

In recent years at the San Mateo County Fair, we’ve displayed many beautiful items created by you, the creative crafters of the FabMo community. They have been made largely of fabrics, as you would expect, but neat things made from tiles, papers and more have also been displayed.

The variety has included garments, bags, pillows, stuffed animals, hats and much more. The display attracts a lot of attention, and one comment I hear over and over is that these items should have been judged, that they were surely ribbon winners.

If you are interested in submitting an item for judging, the deadline is May 8 (May 15 for late entries). Check out the various sections of the fair for judging, and especially the Sustainable Living section, where our display will be.

Note that you do NOT need to be a San Mateo County resident to submit an entry.

FabMo at the Fair

FabMo has been invited once again to participate at the San Mateo County Fair, June 8-19 at San Mateo Event Center.

We’ll have a good sized display in the Sustainable Living section. We’ve also been invited to have a couple of activity events, probably opening day (Saturday, June 8) and Kids’ Day (Monday, June 10). We’ll probably be offering hand puppet mitts on both occasions. Last year’s display is pictured above. We’ll display 50 or so projects, perhaps more. In past years we’ve shown a wide variety of really neat items, any one of which could have been a ribbon winner if they’d been submitted for judging. There were things made with fabrics, of course, but also papers, tiles, leathers, etc.

We identify each with a unique number which correlates to a legend in the front, so if folks are interested in contacting the maker, they can do so. We also put out bundles of sample materials for visitors to take.
