It’s really true that one person’s trash is another’s treasure.
We are volunteers in the San Francisco Peninsula area with access to an assortment of discontinued high quality fabric samples from the design community. There are many colors, patterns, weights and sizes (majority are a yard or less), plus trims, leathers & carpet samples. We also frequently have wallpapers, sample books, hardware, tassels, and more.
The materials are great for all manner of projects, from creating useful things like purses, pillows, tote bags, quilts, table lines, etc. to art projects, and much more. These cannot be sold AS THEY ARE, although projects made with them are frequently sold as part of fundraising for non-profits or to support individual initiatives.
We set up an approximately monthly distribution in the Palo Alto area with scheduled appointments to come and select what will be of use to the individual. Along the way some magic happens, with networking, sharing of ideas, even the fabrics themselves “talking” to our guests, suggesting projects. The stock is constantly replenished during the distribution, so those coming toward the end are still seeing fresh stuff.
July Fabrix dates are Thursday, July 24th through Saturday, July 26th, location TBD.
Email announcement will be sent approximately a week in advance. If you are not on the notification list, send email to fabrix@fabmo.org to be included. You will be asked for your preferred appointment day and time. We can’t emphasize enough that we replenish stock regularly throughout each day, so there is always fresh inventory coming out. There is no advantage to being in the first group on the first day.
We especially welcome people with projects that benefit churches, charities, schools, or other non-profits, as well as those with a creative drive.
“Prayer comes from truth inside you, and you are continually at prayer when you live according to that truth.” Emanuel Swedenborg
There are many opportunities to repurpose materials otherwise destined for the waste stream. What discards do you see in your communities that can be repurposed? So often it’s just a matter of being asked! Rather than having to pay someone to haul good stuff away, there are willing folks who will pick it up for repurposing. We know it works, and there are organizations like Re-Art (re-art.org) on the Peninsula and Re-Create (recreate.org) in Sacramento doing wonderful work.
What is RePurposing?
Sounds new-agey, doesn’t it?
It’s not reusing - that’s using something up in its original configuration till it has no more usefulness.
It’s not recycling. That separates the components so they can be rebuilt into something different.
Repurposing is taking something with residual value and directing it toward a new and useful purpose.
